The Sling Diaries Love + Adventure, Vol. III: Memory

“A pleasure is full grown only when it is remembered.”
― C.S. LewisOut of the Silent Planet

Each memory is our own.  Like a blossom coming to life, each one yields the fruit that sustains us.  They nourish us, help us grow.  Since we were dating, Jimmy and I have cherished our memories.  We would take long drives, discovering new places while delving into the past.  We'd talk of our favorite aunts, stories our grandparents told us and we would recount the moments we thought our lives were over.  Yet, here we were.  Happy and bursting with life because our remembrances were now sweet.  They were sweet because they were shared. You see, we value the story in it.  There is always a story to tell in each memory.  The greatest writers of literature know this: that our lives are full of literary symbolism, bursting with metaphors and dwelling within us like prose and poetry.

I don't know if it's my love of literature that motivates me, but I always seem to be compelled to document my life through words and images. Maybe I see the story of it all; an unpublished memoir.  I want to remember.  Remember years later, when my memory is fuzzy and the details have faded.  I want to remember when my sons ask me what our first apartment looked like, remember the houses where they were born. Their first and second birthdays, as they learned to walk and then run.  Remember, even the smells and textures of the lives we have lived all along.  It's not merely the sum of the facts of our life that paint the clearest picture, but it's the story that ties the images together.

These photographs will show them they were both held close.  Equally loved and so very different.  They will look and remember, even before their memory has formed. Asher with his soft stares and reserved emotion.  Elliot with his squeals that jump through the screen. He is infinite joy, but like everyone who feels a lot (me, that's me too) he can feel disappointment pretty strongly as well.  So, some of these pictures show the natural course of life.  Because sometimes toddlers cry and you know what?  Babies too.  Because when a two year old boy sees the ocean and birds it's only natural they would want to be let loose, explore what is before them.  He cried to run and it's in these moments that we must remember.  As parents we must remember that our lives are full of the beautiful and the hidden, closeness and pulling away.  They are secure enough to run because they are held.  They are not fearful of falling because they were nourished near at the breast.  I am so thankful that our memories will be full.  Full of a thousand images and infinite love.

I am wearing a simple silk sling in amber.  Jimmy is wearing a simple linen sling in canyon.  Both slings are Sakura Bloom. All of the photos were taken by our friend and talented photographer Rebecca Hurley.
